Official Registration Package

  • Get together your mighty crew of 10
  • Asians & non-Asians – friends & family
  • Co-workers & colleagues – pros & newbies
  • Only a maximum of 15 teams will be allowed to enter
  • Use as many actors and extras as you want
  • Write, shoot, edit your 10-minute digital film
  • Open to BC residents
  • All teams will start creating at the same time
  • Hand in your finished film exactly 10 days later
  • You randomly choose 4 creative elements that we give you to inspire your story
  • Best 3 films will share $5,000 in cash prizes
  • Top films will also be screened at 11th Annual Vancouver Asian Film Festival
  • All films will be screened at a gala event September 8th

Registration

DEADLINE: Sunday, August 19, 2007 – 12:00 PM Noon By online registration, mail, or fax.

FEE: A non-refundable registration fee of $50.00 must be submitted with the registration form. Online payment, cash or cheque will be accepted. (Please make cheques payable to: Vancouver Asian Film Festival.)

TEAM LEADER: Each team must designate a leader who will be the sole representative for all communications between the team and the MAMM / VAFF organizers and to accept any prizes.

15 TEAM LIMIT: Registration will be granted to the first 15 teams that apply, after which, additional teams will be placed on a Wait List, pending any withdrawals. (Teams on the Wait List that do not get into the competition will be refunded their entry fee.)

Eligibility

  1. Competition is open to BC residents only; films must be produced in BC.
  2. Only up to a maximum of 15 teams will be allowed to enter.
  3. Each team may designate up to a maximum of 5 members as Writer(s), Director(s), Producer(s).
  4. Of the writers, directors and producers, at least 2 of these members must be either a visible minority* or Aboriginal.
  5. Additionally, of the writers, directors and producers, at least 1 of these members must be of Asian heritage.
  6. The writers, directors, and producers must participate on only one film and be a member only on one team.
  7. At least one principle actor must be of Asian heritage.
  8. Teams must supply their own equipment and materials.
  9. Executive members of VAFF or employees of Citytv are ineligible to compete.

Official Rules

  1. Films must be produced in a narrative or story structure. No documentaries, music videos, experimental or other genres will be accepted.
  2. All films must be produced in 10 days – during August 20th to 30th, 2007.
  3. All teams are responsible for their own cast, crew, budgets, locations, permits, equipment, transportation, production facilities, copyright clearances, insurance, health & safety, and completion on time.
  4. On Monday August 20 – between 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM – a designated member from each team must confirm their final list of team members, sign a waiver, and pick up their inspiration package from VAFF at the Blanche Macdonald Centre at City Square in Vancouver to begin the competition. (Blanche Macdonald Centre is located at #100-555 West 12th Ave., Vancouver, BC)
  5. Films must incorporate an inspiration package – which contains 4 unique creative/cultural elements randomly selected by each team. Each element must be incorporated within the content of the film.
  6. Each creative package will contain the following items chosen at random on Aug. 20th: 1 object/prop, 1 location/setting, 1 fortune cookie saying, and new for this year, a combination of 2 narrative genres (sci-fi, romance, etc.).
  7. Of all the combination of genre pairings available at the time of random selection on Aug. 20th, teams may elect to consider substituting one of their genres for the Musical genre. However, all music and lyrics must be original and copyrights cleared.
  8. Films must be a maximum of 10 minutes in length, including credits.
  9. Each team may have a maximum of 10 members/crew. Actors and extras are exempt from this restriction.
  10. Films must be NTSC, submitted in “mini DV” digital tape format or digital Quicktime file formats: DV, HDV, DVCProHD. However, teams may use any format to shoot their film.
  11. The VAFF logo must appear in the end credits. (Logo to be supplied by VAFF.)
  12. Films must be submitted in person, by a designated team member, to VAFF at the Blanche Macdonald Centre between 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM on Thursday August 30.

Copyrights

  1. Logos, trademarks, trademark names are not permitted in the films without submitting written permission by the owners for their use prior to the start of the competition.
  2. Copyrighted music and songs must also be accompanied by written permission by the songwriter, band, or owners and submitted by August 30, 2007.
  3. It is understood that the filmmakers allow Vancouver Asian Film Festival the rights to use all films submitted for the Mighty Asian Moviemaking Marathon in their entirety for promotional and fundraising purposes, including use of clips and images on the website, at events, in advertising, sponsorship and fundraising materials and activities, and any media outlets.

Visible Minority Groups

  1. Members of Visible Minority Group: persons who are non-Caucasian in race or non-white in colour – or Aboriginal (Status, Non-Status, Metis or Inuit).
  2. Please note that visible minority is determined by race or colour not by place of birth or nationally.
  3. Members of visible minorities in Canada include: Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, South East Asian (e.g. Cambodian, Indonesian, Laotian, Vietnamese), South Asian (e.g. Punjabi, Sri Lankan, Bangladeshi, Pakistani), Black (e.g. African, Haitian, Jamaican, Somali), Arab (e.g. Armenian, Egyptian, Iranian, Lebanese, Moroccan), Latin American, and other (an other non-white racial group not identified). UBCP Members

  1. Please note that there have been changes this year at UBCP (Union of BC Performers) with regards to ultra-low budget films. There are no longer any waivers available, and so, MAMM teams will need to plan well ahead.
  2. Therefore, MAMM teams wishing to use UBCP performers in their film must abide by the new payment regulations and application deadline.
  3. Teams will need to apply for and qualify for their Ultra Low Budget Agreement at least 2 weeks prior to principal photography and agree to pay ALL performers in the production the minimum daily payments. (http://www.ubcp.com)
