Those who are unfortunately touched by War are forever changed and continue to feel its repercussions throughout their lives. It changes perspectives and choices. In THE EMPEROR’S NEW CLOTHES, a new spin is taken on this tale using chess pieces. Then the fascinating documentary SOMEONE ELSE’S WAR reveals the underclass of workers servicing the war in Iraq. Finally, in THEY CHOSE CHINA, award winning filmmaker Shuibo Wang documents the lives of American POWs who chose to stay in China after the Korean War.
They Chose China

Director/Writer: Shuibo Wang | Producers: Claude Bonin, NFB National Film Board of Canada
Documentary | Beta | Colour | 2005 | 53 minutes | Canada
It is January 1954. The Korean War is over. Captured UN soldiers held in POW camps are free to return home. Those who refuse repatriation to their homeland are transferred to a neutral zone and given 90 days to reconsider their decision. Among them are 21 American soldiers who decide defiantly to stay in China. Back in the US, McCarthyism is at its height. Many Americans believe these young men have been brainwashed by Chinese communists through a new form of thought control. Featuring never-before-seen footage from the Chinese camps as well as interviews with former POWs and their families, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Shuibo Wang (SUNRISE OVER TIANAMMEN SQUARE) aims his camera on this astonishing story.

Someone Else’s War

Director/Writer: Lee Wang
Documentary | Beta | Colour | 2006| 25 minutes | USA
In the background of the war in Iraq is an invisible army of 30,000 low-wage workers from South and Southeast Asia. These men and women do the dirty work on U.S. military bases and earn a fraction of what U.S. contractors do. SOMEONE ELSE’S WAR is the first documentary to examine the new underclass created by American warfare. Told through the eyes of three Filipinos and their families, it provides an intimate look at the poverty and desperation that force workers into war zones in the hopes of bettering their own and their families’ lives. Using interviews, archival material, and footage smuggled by Halliburton employees, the film takes viewers into a world that few outside of Iraq have seen.
