The Vancouver Asian Film Festival, the oldest film festival of its kind in Canada, is turning 15. To celebrate, we’re looking back at some of the films from past festivals produced by Asian-Canadian filmmakers. Each screening is followed by a dialogue about the films’ issues and relevance to today’s evolving diversity. Our August program explores the theme of “Fitting In” with Kira Wu’s Whitewash, Jane Kim’s Wide-Eyed, and Jari Osborne’s Sleeping Tigers: The Asahi Baseball Story.

VAFF 15 Retrospective #1: My Parents, Myself: Identity Docs
Wednesday June 15, 2011

Retrospective #1 – “My Parents, Myself: Identity Docs.”
As immigrants, we all feel the need to assimilate to our new environment. We soon cross the cultural divide and take on a shared identity that future generations will settle into. How does this identity-blending affect our growth and perception? Karin Lee’s Comrade Dad reflects on growing up in her father’s Communist bookstore on Vancouver’s Skid Row. Felix Cheng’s Canadian-Chinese examines the influences of our spoken language. And Diana Leung and Kamala Todd’s Cedar and Bamboo explores the rich and complex relationships of people of mixed Chinese and Aboriginal roots.
Arrive early; admission is free, but seating is limited.
Films in program: Comrade Dad (Dir. Karin Lee); Canadian-Chinese (Dir. Felix Cheng); Cedar and Bamboo (Dir. Diana Leung and Kamala Todd).
TIME: Wednesday, June 22 · 7:00pm – 8:30pm
LOCATION: Kensington Branch – Vancouver Public Library, 1428 Cedar Cottage Mews, Vancouver, BC

How do you kick off a great summer? Speed Date A Film Expert
Wednesday May 25, 2011
On May 19 at the J-Lounge downtown, the Vancouver Asian Film Festival partnered with the Independent Film & Video Meetup Group to offer independent Vancouver filmmakers the opportunity to ask a director, writer, producer, set designer, cinematographer and entertainment lawyer anything, in under 3 minutes.
There was an opportunity to mix and mingle afterward with other independent filmmakers and VAFF supporters, and cap off the evening with a live performance by local band Aching Heart Foundation.
The fundraiser was also the launch of the VAFF “Love Letters to Vancouver” contest, celebrating Vancouver 125 and VAFF 15.
Thanks to all the filmmakers and volunteers who helped make this event possible.
